Silent Valley National Park
Silent Valley National Park is the largest national park which is located at Manarkkad in Palakkad district. It is a large national park of tropical evergreen forest and rainforest. It is also a habitation to a various array of species. It is situated in the Nilgiri hills, has a core zone of 89.52 km2 which is encircled by a buffer area of 148 km2. In 1984 the silent valley was publicized as a national park and official it opened in 1985.
Silent Valley National Park is a perfect destination to chill out with our loved ones, especially for nature explorers. This place is under the control of Palakkad Division Since 1988. It is an eco-friendly tourism destination. The ambiance of this place is beyond words.
Silent valley gets the abundant quantity of rainfall during the monsoons. In between October and November, the park also gets a particular amount of rainfall. The mean temperature is 20.2 degree Celsius. The hottest months are April and May. At this time the temperature is 23 degree Celsius. The coldest months are December and January and the mean temperature is 18 degree Celsius.
Flora and Fauna
The flora of the valley includes around 1000 species of flowering plants, 108 varieties of orchids, 75 lichens and about 200algae, 100 ferns and fern allies and 200 liverworts.
The silent valley is rich in faunal diversity. It includes 34 species of mammals, 292 species of birds, 31 species of reptiles, 22 species of amphibians, 13 species of fishes, 500 species of butterflies and moths. The lion-tailed macaque is the most famous inhabitant of the park.
There is a watchtower which has 300 vertical steps. Moreover, at the finishing point of the trek, there is a river which is known as Kunthi River. It is a tributary of the river Thuthapuzha and later it merges into the Barathapuzha River. The Kunthi river is famous for its crystal clear water and for eternal scenery. There is an eco-shop where you can buy a wide variety of eco-friendly products from the tribal folk of the area. They sold high-quality products and the prices are nominal. Overall the panoramic view from the watchtower and the scene of Kunthi River from the hanging bridge was mind-blowing. Best time to visit the silent valley national park is from December to April.
Important points to consider before trekking:
- Book in advance for safari and other ecotourism packages.
- Recommended using trekking shoes.
- Bring a binocular to get a more clear view and to make the trip remarkable.
- Beware of wild animals. Keep a distance from them.
- Use of Alcohol, cigarettes and any kinds of drugs is strictly prohibited.
- Do not carry arms or any other weapons and also any type of inflammable materials.
- Using mobile phones is not allowed.
- Do not litter any plastic materials inside the park.
- Destructing the vegetation and injuring wildlife is a punishable violation.
