Koratty Muthy Feast
Koratty muthy feast is a famous festival in Kerala. Koratty St. Mary’s forane Church organises this spectacular event in the second week of October every year. This Marian Pilgrim Center is located at a small village Koratty.
Koratty is a beautiful and scenic village in Thrissur district of Kerala. Koratty muthy shrine is a major attraction there. It is established in 1381 and renewed in 1987. It belongs to Syro Malabar Catholic community.
The church compound includes a Rosary village which is a picturesque place with full of sculptures of the rosary and with a good ambience. We can spend time there to understand the mysteries of the rosary and to recite it. Also, we can see that the prayer ‘Hail Mary…’ is written in different languages in the rosary village.
The festival is dedicated to mother Mary locally known as Koratty muthy. She is also known as Our Lady with Poovan bananas. This mega event is done with a number of rituals and vibrant ceremonies. Even though the feast is organized for the devotees, people from different sects and religions used to participate. Many are coming from far places to get blessings from mother Mary and to enjoy the carnival and celebrations.
Main offerings are poovankula and walking on the knees. Thulabharam with poovankula is another offering in which they use plantain according to the body weight of the believer. Also, the devotees used to sit in front of the altar whole day with meditation and prayers which is called bhajan. They don’t care to spend a lot of time doing these offerings because of their strong belief in the power of Koratty muthy.
The celebration is not only for one day as other Church festivals but it is celebrated two weeks. The first, eighth and fifteenth days’ celebrations will be grand. Also, there will be a ceremonial show of fireworks during those days. The whole village will be crowdy. The traffic will be controlled by the Police.
The church compound and the nearby places will be filled with tiny shops where we can buy kitchen utensils, plastic items, ornaments, toys, balloons, etc. There will be a play area with many adventurous rides and magic shows to entertain the kids.
