Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Kochi
Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is one of the largest stadia in India. It is a multi-purpose international stadium, situated in Kochi, Kerala. The initial purpose was to conduct football matches. But later on, it became the venue for cricket matches, political events, and major exhibitions.
Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) is the owner of this stadium. Recently they leased out the stadium to Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) for 30 years. It was built in 1996 during the tenure of Sri. K Karunakaran.
It is also known as Kaloor International Stadium because it is situated in the town called Kaloor. The location is easily accessible because frequent metro train services and bus services are available to reach here. There will be special metro services on the day of matches. It has a stop at the entrance of the stadium.
Features of JLN Stadium
This world-class international sports stadium has a capacity to hold 60000 spectators. Including the bucket seats in the top tier of the stadium, the sitting capacity is 75000 presently which makes it the second largest stadium in India. But for the Indian Super League, there will be only 39000 seats.
It has a distinctive architecture with giant convex floodlight pylons arching over the ground. When all the lights are switched on fully it has a lighting level of HD telecast. Really it is a treat to sit and watch the matches whether it is a cricket match or football match. Two screens are there inside the stadium to get a better view.
It has hosted a number of cricket and football matches. It is the home ground of the Kerala Blasters FC and the Kerala Cricket Team. The best time to visit the stadium is during the Indian Super League and other such major matches.
It has been a lucky place for the Indian cricket team. Sachin Tendulkar prefers this pitch because he has taken both his five-wicket hauls in ODIs here. After his retirement, the pavilion was named as Sachin Tendulkar’s pavilion as an honour to him.
It has been the site for many Indian film scenes as in Tamil movies Boys, Velayudhan and Malayalam movie Run Baby Run.
There are a few coffee shops in the stadium compound. It is a good place for a hangout with family or friends even if there are no matches. Many come here for a morning walk, jogging, cycling, skating or even for a friendly chat. We can see kids engaged in their regular sports activities.
The stadium surroundings are very clean and well maintained. The staff are very friendly and helpful. It has more than 16 entrances around. Car parking area is very spacious.
